About Cornish Carvolth - Somerset Prince
St Piran Flag, patron saint of the Cornish miners
*NAME MEANING: CARVOLTH: possible carn-(m)volgh, rock pile of the thrush (m mutates to v) (thrush is actually molgh los) The Carvolth lineage originally comes from Cornwall in England. They lived mostly around the central areas of Cubert, Gwennap and Redruth and were usually employed as miners in the copper and tin mines. Women were also employed in the mines. They worked on the surface and were known as BAL MAIDENS. Conditions in the mines were horrific with many men and women losing their lives at a young age. This was either through tunnel collapses, or lung diseases associated with mining. Map of Cornwall However it was in the mid 19th century that mining reached its zenith, before foreign competition depressed the price of copper and later tin, to a level that made Cornish ore unprofitable. This led to a large proportion of the Carvolth families migrating to Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, United States of America and South America. The name lives on in most of these countries except for New Zealand. South America has a derivative of the name. The last Carvolth birth in the United Kingdom was recorded in 1951. In the 1911 United Kingdom Census only nine names are recorded and now only two Carvolths remain on the 2008-2009 Electoral Roll. They were possible born in South Africa. In the 1955 British Phone Book five names are listed, two possible the same person. In the 1954 Australia Electoral Rolls, forty-nine names are recorded including one family in Western Australia. In the 1930 Census for the United States three names are listed. The Carvolth families have grown considerable in these two countries since then. A special thanks to Susan Rieck (nee Reed) for all her information and photos and sending me on the right path. Also to my new found cousins, Gary Davis and Ian Munt, for all their information and photos. * Other Useful Links The Haddrell Family Reed Australia Webmaster:Susan Reed Champ, Brisbane, Wilton, Reed Family Tree Webmaster: Peter Champ Rossow & Beitzel Genealogy Pages Webmaster: Anne McLean Family Search LDS Site Ancestry.com Roots Web Curious Fox Scotlands People Genuki Find My Past National Library of Australia Western Australia Index for Births, Deaths and Marriages Tasmanian Index for Births, Deaths and Marriages New Zealand Index for Births Deaths and Marriages Papers Past - New Zealand Passenger Lists - New Zealand

Prince Family Reunion 2009
David Prince has researched and published a detailed history of the Australian Somerset Prince's. This has been copied several times by people who are remotely related to the Prince line. I am directly descended from Harry Prince and Jessie Robb as my Grandfather was one of their many children. With all of David's research I have given his name as my source. Some of the research is my own. In 2000 and June 2009 David organised a PRINCE FAMILY REUNION at Gatton, Queensland. Many of the direct descendants and their families attended. I attended with my family and had a wonderful day as we were very close to the Gatton families. We spent many childhood holidays, with our cousins, at Uncle Henry and Aunty Nora's property, which is just outside of Gatton. We always loved getting up extra early to help Colin and Joyce milk the cows and feed the pigs. I think we were more of a hindrance then a help....they were so patient with us! Please read the stories section. Map of Somerset
